The University of Maine at Farmington field hockey team opened its season with a 2-1 loss to Endicott College today.
The Beavers (0-1) are scheduled to host Gordon College Saturday at 2 p.m.
Allison Forgues (Auburn, ME) and Joanne Reid (Clarksville, MD) each scored a goal as the Gulls evened their record at 1-1.
The first half saw all the scoring as Forgues put the Gulls on the board first, taking the ball from the top of the box and dribbling through the Beavers’ defense and scoring in the far right corner of the net for an early 1-0 lead. Joanne Reid would pad the lead to 2-0 later in the frame as the junior took a feed from Lauren Atkinson (Southbury, CT) and blasted a goal from just inside the circle.
Farmington responded nearly a minute later as Lilly Barry (Hermon, ME) took a pass from Alyssa St. Pierre (Jay, ME) off a rebound to cut the deficit to 2-1.
Both teams had opportunities in the second half as the Gulls took eight shots and the Beavers countered with six of their own. However, neither team could find the back of the net as the Gulls controlled the ball in the final minutes to earn their first win of 2009.
Endicott’s Taylor Teixeira (Exeter, NH) picked up her first career victory in net by making six saves and allowing the one goal.
Farmington’s Sarah Brown (Windham, ME) suffered the setback for the Beavers despite making three saves and splitting time with Felisha Taylor (Chelsea, ME) who made four stops.
