Field hockey blitzed by Bowdoin

Sarah Brown

BRUNSWICK -- The University of Maine at Farmington field hockey squad suffered a 10-0 setback to defending NCAA Division III champ Bowdoin College in non-conference action tonight at Howard F. Ryan Field.

The Beavers dropped to 5-6 with a trip to Husson University for a North Atlantic Conference contest Saturday at 5 p.m. The Polar Bears, ranked 14th nationally, ran their record to 8-3.

Farmington's Sarah Brown (Windham, ME), who made a season-high 17 saves in the first half alone, swept aside a flurry of Bowdoin chances in the early going, only to see the Polar Bears explode for five goals in just over 18 minutes late in the period. Ella Curren notched a pair of goals of penalty corners as Megan McCullough, Ingrid Oelschlager and Jessie Small also collected first-half goals.

The onslaught continued in the second half for Bowdoin thanks to goals from McKenna Teague and Elizabeth Clegg. Kassey Matoin's first career goal made it 8-0 before tallies from Cathleen Smith and Small rounded out the scoring.

First-year Kayla Lessard posted a shutout in her first career start, making two stops between the pipes for the Polar Bears.

Felisha Taylor (Chelsea, ME) made two stops in the second period for Farmington in relief of Brown.

Jessie Small finished with two goals and an assist to lead Bowdoin's scorers while Oelschlager carded two assists to go with her one goal.

Bowdoin outshot Farmington 38-3 and held an 18-1 advantage in penalty corners.

The Beavers have not beaten the Polar Bears since 1988, a stretch of 20 consecutive games.
