Field hockey bound for NCAAs

FARMINGTON – The University of Maine of Farmington field hockey team repeated as North Atlantic Conference champions with a 3-1 victory over Husson College at Prescott Field on Sunday.

The Beavers (13-5) advance to the NCAA Division III Championships. The tournament field is scheduled to be announced on Monday. The Eagles finished their season at 12-5.

Farmington bolted out to a 3-0 lead over the first 20 minutes. Kristen Chambers (Gorham, ME) one-timed a feed by Elyse Cole (Winthrop, ME) at 9:55 for a 1-0 edge. Rebecca Roy (Skowhegan, ME) padded the insurance lead with a pair of tallies. Roy knocked in a Chambers pass at 16:54 and scored off an assist by Alyssa St. Pierre (Jay, ME) for a 3-0 command.

Farmington goalkeeper Kaeleigh Barker (Chicester, NH) kept the Eagles at bay with 10 saves, including a kick save on a penalty stroke by Shawna Bell (Corinth, ME) late in the second half. Ashley Weeks (Wilton, ME) also stepped up defensively with a defensive save in the first half.

Husson broke up the shutout at 66:54 with a goal by Krystal Doughty (Lisbon Falls, ME), but the Beavers went on to claim its fourth NAC title in the last five seasons.

Husson goalkeeper Kelly Bocchio (Vassalboro, ME) made seven saves in the loss. The Eagles held a 17-13 shot advantage and a 15-7 command in penalty corners.
