Barker, Pullen Earn All-Region Field Hockey Honors

Goalkeeper Kaeleigh Barker (Chicester, NH) and back Amanda Pullen (Dexter, ME) were named to the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) All-New England (East) Second Team, as announced by the association.  Both were key members of the Beavers’ nationally-ranked defense and NAC Championship team.

Barker, a First Team All-Conference honoree, posted a 0.80 goals-against-average this past season, allowing just 14 goals in 18 games, with 11 shutouts.  At one point in the season, she was ranked first nationally among all Division III goalkeepers in GAA and spent most of the season in the top ten.

Pullen was second on the team in scoring (7g, 2a – 16 pts.) and the top scoring defender in the North Atlantic Conference, while also captaining the league’s stingiest defense.  She was named the MVP of the NAC Tournament and also earned First Team All-Conference honors.

Williams College scored four first half goals en route to a 4-1 win over UMaine-Farmington (15-3) this afternoon in the opening round of the 2006 NCAA Field Hockey Tournament, played in Williamstown, MA.  The Ephs built a 2-0 lead before the Beavers’ Katie Gorham (Dexter, ME) cut the lead to 2-1, but responded with two unanswered goals to round out the scoring.

Elyse Cole (Winthrop, ME) scored twice off assists from Andrea Tyler (Augusta, ME) as the UMF field hockey team defeated Western New England College, 2-1, to capture the 2006 North Atlantic Conference Field Hockey Championship.  The Beaver (15-2) have earned the NAC’s automatic berth to the NCAA Division III Field Hockey Tournament.

“I have never been so proud of a team as I am today,” said UMF head coach Cyndi Pratt.  “Our success comes from the overall balance of our team, which we showed today.  Because of that balance, WNEC was unable to focus on just one player on our team.”

The Beavers held a 10-5 advantage in shots, with Kaeleigh Barker (Chicester, NH) making one save.  WNEC’s Emilie Donka had five saves.   The seedings for the NCAA Tournament will be announced on Sunday evening.  Box Score

Katie Gorham (Dexter, ME) scored the game’s first goal and assisted on another to lead the top-seeded UMF field hockey team (14-2) to a 4-2 win over Lasell in semifinal action in the 2006 NAC Field Hockey Tournament.  Lasell entered today’s game as the only conference team to score on the Beavers and added two more today, but it was not enough as UMF built a 4-1 lead early in the second half of play.

Gorham put UMF on the board at the 11:31 mark, scoring off a feed from Nicole Lyons (Cape Elizabeth, ME) following a penalty corner.  Lasell tied the game at the 14:37 mark on a goal by Jackie Motyll, but the Beavers responded with three-straight tallies over the next 30 minutes of play to control play.

Alyssa St. Pierre (Jay, ME) scored with 17:29 remaining to give the UMF field hockey team a 1-0 non-conference victory over the University of New England on Wednesday evening in Biddeford.  The win was the sixth-straight for the Beavers (9-1), who improved their road record to 6-0.

Winning goalie Kaeleigh Barker '09 (Chichester, NH) was called upon to make five saves on her way to her sixth shutout.  Box Score

UMF Field Hockey Picked Second in Preseason Poll

Despite returning just four starters from last season’s squad, which advanced to the league championship game, the UMF field hockey team has been picked to finish second in the 2006 North Atlantic Conference (NAC) standings, as voted in a preseason poll among league head coaches.  The Beavers, which posted an 11-6 overall record last year and a 6-1 mark in league play, will rely on the scoring of sophomore Kristen Chambers (Gorham, ME), the team’s leading returning scorer, and the goalkeeping of Kaeleigh Barker (Chicester, NH), who returns following a strong freshman season in 2005.  UMF will open its regular season on Saturday, Sept. 9 with a non-conference game at St. Joseph’s (1:00 pm).

Western New England College, which handed UMF its lone conference loss and edged the Beavers in the championship game, was picked to finish first.

UMF WILL RELY ON YOUTH TO RECLAIM NAC FIELD HOCKEY LAURELS IN 2006

The string of conference championships for the UMF field hockey team came to an end in 2005, but to call last season a disappointment would be inaccurate.  The Beavers once again advanced to the NAC championship game, but fell one goal short in its effort to capture a fourth-straight league title.  That disappointment will be the driving force behind the youthful, yet talented 2006 team.

“We have a very young squad with only FOUR returning starters,” said head coach Cyndi Pratt. “They have a lot of ability but we’ll have to see how they react in game situations.”

Gone from last season are the team’s top three scorers – Kristy Veazie, Kristen Allen and Mary Sinclair – so the Beavers will need to compensate for the lost production.  The most likely candidate to do so is Kristin Chambers, the team’s top returning scorer (6g, 5a – 17 pts.).

“Kristen will need to carry a bigger load this year,” said Pratt.  “She was very good for us last season, but didn’t have the pressure or expectations associated with being our go-to player.”

Several players will compete for time up front, including Andrea Tyler, who tallied four goals last season, Elyse Cole and Katie Gorham, who combined for two goals and two assists.  Additional support will likely come from a talented crop of newcomers.

On defense, UMF will rely heavily on a pair of talented players in Nicole Lyons and Amanda Pullen.  Lyons and Pullen both started all 17 games last season and their experience will prove invaluable in 2006.

“Nicole is a two-year starter and a solid all-around player,” said Pratt.  “She is extremely skilled and versatile and could be used in a variety of roles this coming year.”

“Amanda is our leader on defense and will serve as our team captain.  She has great field vision and we’ll rely on her to organize things and be our field general.”

Erika Lucas, Bethany Marshall and Samantha Kenison will be the favorites to earn starting spots in the midfield, with Renee Trafton and Ashley Weeks adding depth in the back.

In goal, Kaeleigh Barker returns following a strong rookie season.  She started 15 games last season, posted three shutouts and registered a 1.77 goals-against-average.  Those numbers are likely to improve this season with a year of seasoning.

“Kaeleigh gained some important experience last season and I expect her to be a much more confident goalkeeper this year,” said Pratt.  “We’ll need her to play well in order to be successful this season and I think she is up to the challenge.”

With only four starters returning, the preseason carry an additional importance this year, as player vie for starting spots and playing time.  There is also a good chance that the starting lineup for UMF’s season opener will not see the same throughout the season, as Pratt and her staff work to find the right mix heading into postseason play.

“We have a large class of incoming players who will have a large impact on our program, but it is too early to tell how that might impact us this season,” said Pratt.  “We need to find consistent goal scorers to fill the void left by graduation and we need people who can prove their value in game situations.”

In order to be successful, according to Pratt, the Beavers must take advantage of their team speed and depth and capitalize on scoring opportunities while playing sound defense.  Equally as important, the team must also improve as the year progresses so it can be playing its best at tournament time.

“I think it is very important for us to get out there and gain experience and build out confidence in the early part of the season so we’ll be ready when the tougher NAC competition begins,” said Pratt.  “We want our players to be playing their best when the playoffs begin and the only way to get better is to go out and play.”

After an alumnae game on Sept. 3, the Beavers travel to Saint Joseph’s on Sept. 9 for their first regular season game and open at home on Wednesday, Sept. 13, with the first conference game vs. Thomas – the first of eight home contests during the 2006 season.
