UMF Field Hockey Has 12 Named to 2005 NFHCA Division III National Academic Squad

Twelve members of the UMF field hockey team were recently honored by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association and named to its Division III National Academic Squad.  In addition, the UMF team was honored for having a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher, one of 73 institutions nation-wide to achieve this distinction.  The National Academic Squad program recognizes those collegiate student-athletes who have achieved a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.30 through the first semester of the 2005-06 academic year. The National Academic Team Award recognizes those institutions that achieve a minimum GPA of 3.0 during the first semester of the 2005-06 academic year.

Veazie, Sinclair, Berry Earn All-Region Field Hockey Honors from NFHCA

Forward Kristy Veazie (Dexter, ME), midfielder Mary Sinclair (New Sharon, ME) and back Mary Berry (Norridgewock, ME) have been named to the All-New England (East) team by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) for their performances this fall.  Veazie earned First Team honors, while Sinclair and Berry were named to the second team.

Veazie, the Beavers’ leading scorer, had 40 points (16g, 8a), led the conference in points per game (2.35) and was second in goals/game (0.94).  Sinclair (8g, 3a – 19 pts.) was second on the team in goals and points and among the top ten in the conference.  Berry scored two goals and added an assist this season for five points and, more importantly, directed a defensive effort that allowed 27 goals in 17 games – and just seven in seven league contests. 

It is believed to be the first time in program history that three UMF players were named to the All-Region team in the same season.  NFHCA Release

Field Hockey Suffers Heartbreaking, 2-1 Loss to WNEC

With the game tied at 1-1, WNEC scored the game-winning goal with :08 left in regulation to capture the 2005 NAC Field Hockey Championship tonight in Springfield.  After a scoreless first half, the Golden Bears went ahead 1-0 on a goal by Cori Eggert with 8:02 remaing, but Maine-Farmington tied the contest with 2:10 left in the game when senior Kristi Cochin (Sanford, ME) tallied on a penalty corner with assists from classmates Mary Berry (Norridgewock, ME) and Kristen Allen (Mexico, ME)

Freshman Kaeleigh Barker (Chichester, NH) made 13 stops for the Beavers (11-6).

UMF Quartet Earns NAC Field Hockey Honors

Four members of the UMF field hockey team earned All-Conference honors from the North Atlantic Conference (NAC), including three spots on the First Team.  Forward Kristy Veazie (Dexter, ME), midfielder Mary Sinclair (New Sharon, ME) and back Mary Berry (Norridgewock, ME) were named to the All-NAC First Team, while Kristy Cochin (Sanford, ME) earned honorable mention accolades.

Veazie, the Beavers’ leading scorer, had 40 points (16g, 8a) through the NAC quarterfinals and led the conference in points per game (2.67) and was second in goals/game (1.08).  Sinclair (8g, 2a – 18 pts.) is second on the team in goals and points and among the top ten in the conference.  Berry scored two goals this season for four points and directed a defensive effort that allowed 23 goals in 15 games – the fifth-lowest total in the league.  Cochin has registered two goals and three assists for seven points this season.

Field Hockey Edges Simmons, 3-2, in Overtime to Advance to NAC Finals

Kristen Allen (Mexico, ME) scored a pair of goals, including the game winner in overtime on an assist from Mary Sinclair (New Sharon, ME), to lift the UMF field hockey team to a thrilling, 3-2 win over Simmons this afternoon.  With the win, the Beavers advance to the conference finals to play the winner of today’s Castleton State/WNEC game.  In addition to Allen’s two goals, Lauren Stevens (Temple, ME) also scored for UMF (11-5), which received 14 saves from Kaeleigh Barker (Chicester, NH).  Barker also stopped a penalty stroke in the first overtime.

Field Hockey Downs Becker, 2-0, in NAC Quarterfinals

The UMF field hockey team won its 10th game of the season and began its quest for a fourth-straight conference championship with a 2-0 win over Becker this afternoon in Farmington.  Kristy Veazie and Kristen Allen both scored during an eight-minute span midway through the opening half and the Beaver defense did the rest, limiting Becker to just seven shots in the entire game.  Veazie’s unassisted goal, her 16th of the season, came at the 22:34 mark, while Chambers finished off a feed from Katie Gorham at 29:01 for the insurance tally.  Kaeleigh Barker stopped five shots in goal for UMF, which now advances to the NAC semifinals – at second-seeded Simmons on Tuesday, Nov. 1 at 2 pm.

UMF Earns Third Seed in NAC Field Hockey Tourney;  To Host No. 6 Becker on Sat.

The UMF field hockey team (9-5, 6-1 NAC) has earned the third seed in the NAC Tournament and will host sixth-seeded Becker (7-8, 3-5 NAC) on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. at Prescott Field.  For a complete listing of games and times for tournament, visit the NAC website at www.nacathletics.com.

Field Hockey at Simmons is Postponed

For the second time in three days, the UMF field hockey team had a contest postponed, as today's game at Simmons was called off due to rain.  The status of Sunday's game vs. Castleton State and today's game at Simmons is still pending.

Field Hockey Controls Action but Falls, 1-0, to WNEC

Despite holding a 24-4 edge in shots, including an 11-0 advantage in the second half, the UMF field hockey team suffered a 1-0 loss to conference-leading Western New England this afternoon at Prescott Field.  WNEC scored a breakaway goal at the 22:20 mark of the first half and used a 19-save effort from its goalie to preserve the victory.  Kristen Allen and Mary Sinclair each took five shots to lead UMF, which played much of the game without leading scorer Kristy Veazie, who suffered an injury midway through the first half and did not return.  The loss drops UMF to 9-5 overall and 6-1 in NAC action.

Field Hockey Falls to Bowdoin, 5-1, in Battle of Top Programs

In a battle between the top teams in the NESCAC and NAC, the UMF Beavers suffered a 5-1 loss at Bowdoin this afternoon in Brunswick.  The Polar Bears registered the first two goals to open the scoring, but UMF's Mary Sinclair notched her ninth goal of the season with just over 2:00 remaining in the opening half to pull the Beavers back within striking distance at the half.  Bowdoin, however, scored three times in the final 25 minutes of play to seal its victory.  UMF (9-4) received a strong effort in goal from Kaeleigh Barker, who turned away a season-high 11 shots.

Veazie Earns NAC Weekly Honors

Kristy Veazie, a senior from Dexter, was named the NAC Field Hockey Player of the Week for leading UMF to a 2-0 week week.  She registered four goals and an assist in wins over Husson and the University of New England, scoring three goals vs. the Nor’Easters.  She leads the Beavers in goals (15), assists (8) and points (38) and has led the team to a 6-0-0 record in conference play.

Field Hockey Rolls Past UNE, 6-2

Kristy Veazie of Dexter scored twice in the first half and finished the game with a hat trick to lead the UMF field hockey team to a 6-2 win over the University of New England this afternoon in Farmington.  The Beavers took a 3-0 lead into the halftime break and added three more goals in the second half, as Mary Sinclair and Andrea Tyler rounded out the scoring.  Kristen Allen chipped in with a first-half goal and an assist for UMF, which improved to 9-3 with today's victory and won for the fourth time in its last five contests.

UMF Field Hockey Blanks Husson, 2-0

After over 60 minutes of scoreless play, UMF scored twice in just over two minutes to defeat Husson College, 2-0, in field hockey action in Bangor on Monday morning.  Kristy Veazie scored the first goal, off an assist from Kristi Cochin, at the 63:13 mark and Veazie then set up Mary Sinclair for an insurance goal at the 65:38 mark.  Kaeleigh Barker was perfect in goal, stopping four shots for the shutout victory. The win improves the Beavers' record to 8-3 overall and a perfect 6-0 in NAC play.

UMF field hockey loses to Colby

UMF dropped a tough, 2-1 defeat at the hands of the Colby College Mules in Waterville, with all scoring taking place in the second half.  Colby scored first on a penalty stroke with 23 min. left in the game. UMF fought back and scored the tying goal with only 1:30 left in the contest. Kristen Chambers knocked in the goal on a scramble in front of the net. Colby answered back just 1 min. later with the game winner. UMF’S record now stands at 7-3 (5-0 in the NAC).

Field Hockey Defeats Becker and Elms

The UMF field hockey team defeated Becker College 3-2 on Saturday and Elms College 6-1 on Sunday to improve to 5-0 in the North Atlantic Conference.  Versus Becker, the Beavers found themselves down 0-1 after the first period, then tied the game in the first minute of the second period when Lauren Stevens put the ball in the cage at the 34:09 mark.  Becker answered 15 minutes later to take a 2-1 advantage, but Kristen Allen sparked the Beavers into scoring two unanswered goals when she assisted Kristy Veazie at the 18:09 mark and scored herself at the 11:48 mark on an assist from Mary Sinclair.  Goalie Kaeleigh Barker made 9 saves for the Beavers.  On Sunday versus Elms College UMF held a 2-0 lead after the first period, then exploded for 4 more goals in the second period to defeat Elms 6-1.  Scorers for UMF were Mary Sinclair - 2 goals, Kristy Veazie - 1 goal, 1 assist, Andrea Tyler - 1 goal, Elyse Cole - 1 goal, Samantha Kennison - 1 goal, Katie Gorham - 1 assist, Kristen Allen - 1 assist.  UMF goalie Kaeleigh Barker made 1 save.  UMF stands at 7-2 overall and 5-0 in the NAC.  They return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Colby College for a 6pm non-conference match up.

Field Hockey Loses to Bates in Overtime 3-4

The UMF field hockey team lost a tough battle with Bates College yesterday in Lewiston, finally going down in overtime with a 3-4 score.  Bates opened up the scoring only 7:33 into the game.  UMF evened the score two minutes later when Kristy Veazie scored with Kristi Cochan assisting. The Bobcats answered a few minutes later to give Bates a 2-1 lead.  UMF opened up the second half when Veazie scored her second goal of the game only 2:22 into the half to tie it. Bates answered again with 13:20 remaining in regulation to recapture the lead. UMF’s Mary Berry extended the Beavers' chances on an unassisted goal with 2:55 remaining to put the game into overtime.  Only 1:30 into overtime, Bates knocked in the game winner off of a penalty corner.  Bates took a total of 19 shots to UMF’s 16. UMF goalie Kaeliegh Barker stopped nine shots.  UMF drops to 5-2 overall and will return to action on Saturday when they travel to Becker College for a 12pm North Atlantic Conference match up and again on Sunday when they take on Elms College in Springfield, MA at 1pm.

Field Hockey Blanks Wheelock

The UMF field hockey team blanked visiting Wheelock College 9-0 today in North Atlantic Conference Action.  Seven Beavers scored for UMF including Kristy Veazie (2), Kristen Allen, Kristen Chambers, Ashley Thayer, Mary Sinclair, Amanda Fortin and Elyse Cole.  Chambers, Sinclair, Veazie and Allen all handed out assists as well.  Nicole Lyons also had an assist.  UMF improves to 5-1 overall and 3-0 in the NAC.  The Beaver return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Bates for a non-conference match up.

Field Hockey Defeats Lasell 3-2

The UMF field hockey team scored early in the first period and added two more goals in the first half to defeat visiting Lasell 3-2 in Farmington.  UMF held a comfortable 3-0 advantage at the half.  Mary Sinclair started off the scoring followed by Kristy Veazie and Kristen Chambers.  But Lasell battled back in the second period to give the Beavers a scare after scoring back to back goals.  UMF goalie Kaeleigh Barker earned the win in the first collegiate start of her career.  UMF stands at 3-1 overall and 2-0 in the North Atlantic Conference.

Field Hockey Extends Winning Streak

The UMF field hockey team extended its winning streak to 3 games yesterday when they defeated the University of Southern Maine 4-2 in Gorham.  UMF senior Kristy Veazie scored two goals and added an assist in leading the Beavers to the non-conference victory.  The win was the second straight for UMF over the Huskies as they shut out the Huskies 3-0 in 2004. With the victory, Maine Farmington improves its overall record to 3-1 on the season, while the Huskies slip to 2-4.  Senior defender Mary Berry was awarded a penalty stroke and converted her attempt with 47:13 gone in the game.  UMF sealed the win when senior midfielder Kristen Allen converted a centering pass from Veazie to put the Beavers ahead 4-2. Beaver freshman goalkeeper Lorena Borjas (Boothbay, Maine) made just one save in the win.  The Beavers play again on Saturday when they host North Atlantic Conference foe Lasell College at 3 p.m.

Beaver Field Hockey Defeats Thomas 3-1

UMF's Kristen Chambers scored a pair of goals in the Beavers' 3-1 victory over host Thomas College yesterday in Waterville.  Chambers' first goal came 10 minutes into the game off of a pass from Kristy Veazie.  Thomas evened the score early in the second period, but UMF's Kristi Cochin notched the game winner 20 minutes into the final period.  Chambers added an insurance goal with 10 minutes remaining in the game to seal the victory.  UMF outshot Thomas 38-6 and held a 21-6 advantage in penalty corners.  UMF goalies Rachel Sheloske and Lorena Borjas split time in the cage to combine for the win.  UMF stands at 2-1 overall  and 1-0 in the NAC.  The Beavers return to action on Thursday when they travel to the University of Southern Maine for a 4pm non-conference match up.

Field Hockey Defeats St. Joseph's 5-0

The UMF field hockey team scored two goals in the first half and three in the second to blank visiting St. Joseph's College 5-0 in today's non-conference match up in Farmington.  UMF freshman Andrea Tyler scored two goals, one in each half to lead the Beavers attack.  Senior Kristy Veazie added a goal and two assists.  Kristi Cochin and Mary Sinclair both added goals as well.  Kristen Allen and Kristen Chambers had assists.  Goalies Rachel Sheloske and Lorena Borjas combined for the shutout for the Beavers.  UMF returns to action on Wednesday when they travel to Thomas College for the first conference contest of the season.

Field Hockey Suffers Loss to Gordon In Opener

The UMF field hockey team suffered a 0-1 loss today in their season opening game in Farmington.  UMF's defense was solid through 60 minutes of play, but the Gordon offense found a hole at the 58:44 mark to score the only goal they would need.   UMF was led by Kristy Veazie with 4 shots on goal, most of which came in the final minutes of the game.  Rachel Sheloske make four saves on 10 Gordon shots in her first start of her collegiate career.  UMF will return to action next Friday when they host St. Joseph's College at 4:30pm.
