Field Hockey Receives Academic Recognition
Twelve members of the University of Maine at Farmington's field hockey team
have been selected to the National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division
III National Academic Squad. Student-athletes who maintain an overall GPA of
3.30 or higher are eligible for the distinction. UMF's twelve selections is
the most of any field hockey team in the State of Maine. In addition, the
UMF team is ranked in the top 10 in the Nation with a combined GPA of a
3.38. "I am extremely proud of their ability to maintain such academic
integrity in pursuit of back to back conference championships. This is a
great honor for UMF and the field hockey team." said UMF field hockey coach
Beth Evans.

Field Hockey Wins
Back to Back Conference Championships
The UMF field hockey team defeated Simmons College 3-0 today in Boston, MA
to capture its second conference title in as many years. Senior
Erica Gundersen (Bryant Pond, ME) scored the only goal that the Beavers
would need when she knocked home a shot off of a penalty corner in the
first half of play. Kristy Veazie (Dexter, ME) added a goal when she
deflected a shot that Lauren Stevens (Temple, ME) rifled off the cage.
Mary Berry (Norridgewock, ME) added another goal off a penalty corner to
complete the scoring. UMF closes the season with a 12-7 overall
record. All Tournament selections for the Beavers were Ashleigh
Biette (Freeport, ME), Mary Berry, Angie White (Farmingdale, ME) , Erica
Gundersen, and MVP Kristy Veazie.

Field Hockey Upsets Becker, Advances to Championship
The UMF field hockey team defeated Becker College 2-1 in Leicester, MA
yesterday to advance to the North Atlantic Conference championship game on
Saturday November 8th. UMF, the #4 seed dominated possession for
most of the first half out shooting #1 Becker 12-3 and taking seven
penalty corners to Becker's four. At the 18 minute mark, UMF's Mary
Berry (Norridgewock, ME) blasted a penalty stroke past the Becker
goalkeeper who had covered the ball in the circle to cause the stroke.
Becker answered with a goal in the 26th minute to even the game at 1-1 at
the half. Becker came out strong early in the second period, keeping
the ball inside UMF's 25 for the first ten minutes. However, Kristy
Veazie (Dexter, ME) scored the game winner with about twenty minutes to
play on a pass from Angie White (Farmingdale, ME). Ashleigh Biette
(Freeport, ME) made eight saves on twelve Becker shots to preserve the win
for the Beavers. UMF will travel to Simmons College in Boston, MA
for the championship game on Saturday. UMF defeated Simmons 2-1 in
the regular season.

Field Hockey Defeats Thomas
College in Quarterfinal Match, 2-0
The UMF field hockey team defeated Thomas College 2-0 in the first round
of the North Atlantic Conference playoffs in Farmington. After one
half of play the score remained tied 0-0 but in the second half UMF’s
Dorice Reitchel (Augusta, ME) found the net in after 5 minutes of play.
The goal would ultimately prove to be the game winner. Two minutes later,
the Beavers answered again when Mary Sinclair (New Sharon, ME) scored off
an assist from Lauren Stevens (Temple, ME). UMF goalkeeper
Ashleigh Biette (Freeport, ME) made 5 saves on 5 Thomas shots, preserving
the shutout. Thomas goalkeeper Jen Lane made 7 saves on 12 UMF shots in
the loss. The Beavers will play next on Tuesday in the North Atlantic
Conference Semifinals versus Becker College in Leicester, MA.

Field Hockey Rebounds to Defeat Elms 4-0
The UMF field hockey team closed out the regular season with a win at Elms
College yesterday in Chicopee, MA. UMF's Dorice Reitchel (Augusta,
ME) scored her sixth goal of the season and added an assist to lead UMF to
victory. Kristy Veazie (Dexter, ME) also had a goal and an assist.
Angie White (Farmingdale, ME) and Amanda Nimon (Augusta, ME) each added a goal
to round out the scoring. Ashleigh Biette (Freeport, ME) had no
saves on three Elms shots. UMF closes the season with a 9-7 overall
record and 6-3 conference record. UMF awaits the final conference
standings to be released this afternoon to see who they will play in the
quarterfinal game of the NAC tournament.

Field Hockey Loses to Becker in Penalty Strokes
In what was a repeat of last year's meeting between UMF and Becker, UMF
battled to a 0-1 loss in double penalty strokes on Saturday in Leicester,
MA. After playing 100 minutes of scoreless field hockey the Beavers
found themselves in a penalty stroke situation for the first time this
season. UMF's Mary Berry (Norridgewock, ME), Erica Gundersen (Bryant
Pond, ME), Dorice Reitchel (Augusta, ME) and Angie White (Farmingdale, ME)
were called upon to take the strokes. Berry was the only Beaver to
score in both rounds of strokes. Enough to force a second round, but
not enough to secure the win.

Field Hockey Loses to Bowdoin
The UMF field hockey team found themselves facing an extremely talented
Bowdoin College yesterday in Brunswick, ME. Bowdoin, ranked 13th in
the nation, scored early notching four first half goals and added two more
in the second half. UMF goal keeper Ashleigh Biette had seven saves
while being peppered with shots throughout the game. UMF slips to
8-6 overall and will return to action on Saturday when they travel to
Becker College, who is currently undefeated in NAC play.

Field Hockey Loses to Husson 0-1
The UMF field hockey team suffered a tough conference loss yesterday at
Husson College in Bangor, ME. The Beavers were led defensively by
Kristin Allen (Mexico, ME) and Mary Berry (Norridgewock, ME) who had two
defensive saves each. Husson's Karole Anne Emery scored the game
winner ten minutes into the game. UMF goalie Ashleigh Biette nine
saves on 13 Husson shots to keep UMF close. The Beavers drop to 8-5
overall and 5-2 in the NAC. They will return to action on Wednesday
when they travel to nationally ranked Bowdoin College for a 3:30pm
non-conference game.

Field Hockey Defeats Simmons 2-1
The UMF field hockey team defeated Simmons College 2-1 in Boston today for
an important North Atlantic Conference win. UMF's Dorice Reitchel
found the net off a pass from Mary Berry to tie the game at 1-1 with about
five minutes remaining in the first half. Then 12 minutes into the
second half Kristy Cochin netted the game winner unassisted. UMF
improves to 8-4 overall and 5-1 in the conference. The Beavers
return to action tomorrow when they travel to Husson College for another
important conference match up.

Field Hockey Defeats UNE 2-0
The UMF field hockey team scored a goal in each period to secure today's
non-conference victory over the University of New England 2-0.
Lauren Steven's (Temple, ME) scored UMF's game winner at the 29:04 mark
off an assist by Mary Sinclair (New Sharon, ME). In the second
period Angie White (Farmingdale, ME) found the net on a pass from Mary
Berry (Norridgewock, ME). UMF goal keeper Ashleigh Biette (Freeport,
ME) made 12 saves on 14 UNE shots to earn her 5th shutout of the
season. UMF improves to 7-4 overall and will return to action on
Saturday when they travel to Simmons College for a 1pm NAC matchup in
Boston

Field Hockey Game Rescheduled for Tomorrow
Due to inclement weather the UMF field hockey game versus the University
of New England has been rescheduled for tomorrow, Thursday October 16th at
3:30 to be played in Farmington.

Field Hockey Loses to Bates 0-3
Sarah Overmyer ‘05 (Ann Arbor, Mich.) scored a pair of first half goals
off penalty corners to lead the Bates College field hockey team to a 3-0
win over the University of Maine at Farmington in a non-league game on
Campus Avenue Field on Wednesday evening.
In the first half of the game the Beavers were outshot 0-9 and
found themselves behind in penalty corners 0-11. UMF played a much
more even second half holding Bates to just 3 shots and one penalty
corner. In goal for UMF, Ashleigh
Biette knocked away 6 shots, while Sarah Judice made 2 saves for the
Bobcats. UMF returns to action next Wednesday when they host the
University of New England at 3:30pm. The Beavers are currently 6-4
overall and 4-1 in the conference.

Dorice Reitchel is NAC Field Hockey Player of the
Week
UMF senior captain, Dorice Reitchel was selected as the North Atlantic
Conference Field Hockey player of the week on Monday for her performances
in last weeks games. Reitchel had a goal versus Lasell and a goal
and two assists versus Wheelock in UMF's 2-0 week.

Field Hockey Defeats Wheelock 6-1
The UMF field hockey team took control in the first three minutes of play
when Mary Sinclair connected with Dorice Reitchel to give the Beavers a
1-0 advantage. Wheelock answered with 27:42 remaining in the period,
but Reitchel scored the game winner five minutes later off a pass from
Angie White. White added a goal herself with just under a minute
remaining in the period. In the second half Reitchel assisted Lauren
Stevens, Kristy Veazie scored off a pass from Kristi Cochin and Ashley
Thayer added another goal on a pass from Linda Nguyen. In goal for
UMF, Ashleigh Biette recorded 2 saves on 3 Wheelock shots. UMF held
the shooting advantage 33-3. UMF improves to 4-1 in the conference
and 6-3 overall. Next up will be Bates College on Wednesday in
Lewiston at 5pm.

Field Hockey Defeats Lasell 3-0
The UMF field hockey team braved driving rain today to capture its third
conference win of the season versus visiting Lasell College. The
Beavers' first goal came with 5:58 remaining in the first half when Amanda
Nimon connected on a Becky Christiansen pass. In the second period
Mary Sinclair found the net off of an assist by Kristy Veazie four minutes
into the frame. Five minutes later Veazie assisted Dorice Reitchel
to bring UMF's lead to 3-0. In goal for UMF, Ashleigh Biette had 6
saves on 6 shots. UMF will return to action tomorrow when they host
another conference opponent, Wheelock College at 1pm.

Field Hockey Defeats Castleton State 2-1 in Double
Overtime
The UMF field hockey team gave up a goal three minutes into the first
half, but held strong until there was six minutes remaining in regulation
when Amanda Nimon (Augusta, ME) connected with Kristy Veazie (Dexter, ME)
to even the score 1-1. UMF's goal keeper Ashleigh Biette (Freeport,
ME) was stellar in the net making 6 saves including facing down two
overtime penalty strokes. UMF had the opportunity to tie the game
earlier in the second half on a Mary Berry (Norridgewock, ME) penalty
stroke that was saved by Castleton keeper Meghan Aher. The game
winner came with 2:02 left in the second overtime when Berry sent in
a hard shot that was deflected into the net by Becky Christiansen.
UMF improves to 4-3 overall and 2-1 in the NAC. The Beavers return
to action on Saturday when they host Lasell College at 2pm and again on
Sunday when they host Wheelock at 1pm.

Field Hockey Suffers Loss to WNEC 0-1
It was another defensive battle for the UMF field hockey team this
afternoon as they suffered their first conference loss to 2002 conference
runners up Western New England College 0-1. The game, played on a
wet and slippery day, featured little shooting with WNEC holding the edge
with 8 shots versus UMF's 5. Western New England also held the edge
with penalty corners 12-4. The lone goal of the day came after 61:19
had been played. WNEC's Megan Cloutier (Greenfield, MA) connected on
a Stephanie Gildart (Portland, ME/ Deering HS) pass. Ashleigh Biette
(Freeport, ME) had 6 saves on the day for UMF while Jillian Brown
(Plymouth, MA) blocked 4 for WNEC. UMF slips to 3-3 overall and 1-1
in the North Atlantic Conference. The Beavers will return to action
tomorrow when they host Castleton State College at 11am.

Field Hockey Loses to USM 0-1
The UMF field hockey team struggled to find the net yesterday in a
non-conference match up with the University of Southern Maine in Gorham.
The game went scoreless until USM's Kerry Leonard (Stamford, CT) slipped
in a goal with 3:48 remaining in the first half. The remainder of
the game became a defensive battle with USM taking 6 shots and UMF
managing one. In goal for UMF, Ashleigh Biette (Freeport, ME)
notched nine saves. Jesse Superchi (Campton, NH) made three saves.
UMF drops to 3-2 on the season and will return to conference play this
weekend when they host Western New England College on Saturday and
Castleton State on Sunday.

Field Hockey Suffers Loss to Colby
The UMF field hockey team suffered its first loss of the
season yesterday to 19th ranked Colby College, 1-2. After Colby's
Wendy Bonner (Lexington, MA) scored with 5:05 remaining in the first half,
UMF's Mary Sinclair (New Sharon, ME) evened the score at 1-1 with three
minutes later. However, Bonner (Lexington, MA) answered with the
game winner early in the second half. In spite of down pouring rain,
the Beavers managed a late push but were turned away before they were able
to send the game into overtime. Ashleigh Biette had an impressive
performance in goal saving 17 shots for UMF. The Beavers drop to 3-1
overall and will return to action this weekend on Saturday versus
Western New England College and on Sunday versus Castleton State.

Field Hockey Defeats Thomas 3-0
UMF's Mary Berry scored on an Angie White pass to give the
Beavers the only goal they would need to secure their first conference win
of the season. Amanda Nimon and Kristy Veazie each added insurance
goals for UMF. Ashleigh Biette only had to turn away 2 shots to earn
her third shutout of the season. Next up for UMF will be last year's
conference runners up Western New England College in Farmington on
Saturday the 27th at 1pm. UMF sits at 3-0 overall and 1-0 in the
NAC.

Field Hockey Defeats St. Joe's 2-0
UMF's Kristy Veazie scored a goal in each half to lead the
Beaver past visiting St. Joseph's College this afternoon. After a
strong push by St. Joe's early in the first period, the Beavers managed to
hold possession for most of the game while not allowing a single shot in
the second period. UMF out shot the Monks 19-5. Ashleigh Biette
recorded her second shut out while batting away 3 shots. UMF returns
to action on Tuesday when they travel to Thomas College for the first
conference game of the season. UMF currently is 2-0 on the season.

Mary Berry is NAC Field Hockey Player of
the Week
UMF sophomore sweeper, Mary Berry has been selected as the
North Atlantic Conference Player of the Week for her performance in the
Beavers' victory over Gordon College on Saturday. Berry recorded two
defensive saves and a goal in the victory.

Field Hockey Season Preview
The UMF Field Hockey Team, who had a very successful season
in 2002 with 12 wins and 6 losses, will have a new look this year. New to
the starting line up will be Ashleigh Biette in goal, in the midfield will
be Lauren Stevens, and at forward will be Becky Christiansen. Retuning to
the team after a year off will be Jessica Deans, 2001 Rookie of the Year.
The senior class will be lead by midfielders Amanda Nimon, Erica
Gundersen, and Angie White, Mary-Kate Williams and Megan Waterman in
the back and Dorice Reitchel at forward. Junior Sarah
Greenwald will play in goal. The sophomore class will include
Mary Sinclair, Kristi Cochin, Kristen Allen, Kristen Roy, Kristy Veazie
and Mary Berry. Linda Nguyen, Jamie Young and Ashley Thayer will also
provide support from the freshmen class. Players to watch will be
freshmen Kristy Veazie and senior Dorice Reitchel who lead the team last
year with 18 goals.

Field Hockey Defeats Gordon to Start
Season 1-0
The UMF field hockey team got off to a strong start today
when they defeated visiting Gordon College 2-0. UMF's Dorice
Reitchel scored the Beaver's first goal on an assist from Jessica Deans
with 20 minutes remaining in the first half. The Beaver's second
goal came with 21 seconds remaining in the game when Mary Berry connected
with Amanda Nimon on a penalty corner. UMF goalie Ashleigh Biette
blocked 8 shots to record her first career shutout. Next up for the
Beavers will be St. Joseph's College on Saturday the 13th.
