UMF Baseball Ends Regular Season with Bates Split

In its final tune-up before the NAC Baseball Championship, the UMF baseball team split a non-league doubleheader with Bates College today at Hippach Field.  The Beavers won the opener, 6-5, behind a strong starting effort from Scott Hastings (Thomaston, ME) and fell in the second game, 13-3.  UMF finishes the regular season at 9-17 overall.

UMF jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the opener, withstanding a late Bates rally for the 6-5 win.  Hastings allowed just one unearned run through the first five innings before a home run to lead off the sixth cut the lead to 6-2.  In the seventh, a trio of infield errors allowed Bates to pull within one and put the winning run on base, but Brian Morrison (Saco, ME), the reigning NAC Rookie of the Week, entered in relief and recorded the final out to pick up the save.  UMF scored its first run on an RBI single in the second from Dan Stefanilo (Sanford, ME) and then added two more in the third on an RBI double from Corey Provencher (Rumford, ME), who then scored on Tyler Hanson’s (Sanford, ME) RBI single two batters later.  Three more scored in the third, the final on an RBI double from Pete McLaughlin (Benton, ME)

In game two, Farmington built an early, 3-2 lead and did all its scoring in the scoring in the second, but Bates responded with 11 unanswered runs for the win.  An RBI single from Mike Cummings (Lincolnville, ME) in the second was one of three hits for the Beavers.  Box 1  Box 2

THEY’RE IN!
UMF Baseball Completes Weekend Sweep to Earn Spot in NAC Playoffs

The UMF baseball team completed a four-game weekend sweep of Becker and Elms with a pair of one-run victories today, moving into fourth place in the league standings and capturing a spot in the 2007 NAC Baseball Tournament.  The Beavers defeated Elms, 4-3 and 2-1, this afternoon at Hippach Field to finish their conference schedule at 5-7.

Dan Hemdal (Nashua, NH), who pitched 1.1 shutout innings of relief to pick up a victory on Saturday, fired a complete-game six-hitter with nine strikeouts in the Beavers’ 4-3 win.  UMF jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the third, when Pete McLaughlin (Fairfield, ME) singled home the first run, Tyler Hanson (Sanford, ME) delivered a sac fly for the second and Brian Morrison (Saco, ME) doubled home the third.  UMF increased its lead to 4-1 in the fifth when McLaughlin led off with a single and scored on Morrison’s fielder’s choice.  Hemdal (3-2) allowed two runs in the top of the sixth, as Elms sliced the lead to 4-3, but pitched a scoreless seventh to preserve the victory.  Morrison and McLaughlin finished with two hits apiece.

In the second game, Morrison (1-0), making his second start of the season, allowed just one unearned run on five hits while striking out nine in seven innings of work.  He was nicked for a run in the sixth, aided by an outfield error but with runners at the corners, the Beavers snuffed out a double steal attempt to erase the potential go-ahead run and keep the score at 1-1.

In the bottom of the sixth, Kyle Shea (Bar Harbor, ME) reached on a one-out walk, moved to second on an infield error and scored the decisive run when Andrew Bellmore (Monmouth, ME) singled.  Morrison then retired the side in the top of the ninth, striking out his final two hitters.  Box 1   Box 2

UMF Baseball Sweeps Becker to Keep Playoff Hopes Alive
Hanson and Provencher Power Sweep With Home Runs

Needing a sweep to keep its postseason hopes alive, the UMF baseball team responded with a pair of key, NAC wins over Becker today at Hippach Field.  In the opener, Pat Howell (Bristol, ME) fired a complete-game and the Beavers snapped a 3-3 tie with two runs in the bottom of the sixth to post a 5-3 win.  In game two, Farmington scored twice again in the sixth, this time erasing a 7-6 deficit on its way to an 8-7 victory.  UMF is now 6-14 overall and 4-7 in conference play.

After three scoreless frames, Farmington broke through in the bottom of the fourth of game one, when Tyler Hanson (Sanford, ME) delivered his first home run of the season.  After Becker scored three times in the top of the fifth on a bases-clearing double from Josue Lopez, the Beavers knotted the game at 3-3 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning on RBI singles from Pete McLaughlin (Fairfield, ME) and Hanson, both with two outs.  In the sixth, Farmington plated two more, as Phineas Peake (Penobscot, ME) knocked in the go-ahead run and an insurance run crossed on an infield error.  McLaughlin and Hanson had a pair of hits.

In game two, the Beavers jumped out to a 3-0, first inning lead following a two-run home run from Corey Provencher (Rumford, ME).  Becker scored twice in the second and three more in the third, but Farmington responded with three additional runs in the bottom of the third to take a 6-5 lead.  Hanson walked with the bases loaded to force home a run and a pair of infield outs accounted for the other two runs.  Trailing 7-6 in the sixth, McLaughlin delivered a one-out, two-run single, scoring Peake and Aaron Wolfe (Wilton, ME) with the decisive runs.

Kyle Feltis (Bristol, ME) and Dan Hemdal (Nashua, NH) provided 2.2 innings of shutout relief, with Hemdal picking up the victory.  Wolfe, who scored three times, finished 2-for-2, while McLaughlin was 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI.  Box 1   Box 2

Provencher, Hanson Help UMF to Split with Lyndon State

After dropping the opener, 5-3, UMF rallied for three runs in the bottom of the ninth to win the nightcap, 10-9, and secure a split in non-league baseball action today at Hippach Field.  Corey Provencher (Rumford, ME) tied the game with a two-run double and Tyler Hanson (Sanford, ME) ended it with a walk-off, RBI single.  UMF is now 4-13 this season.

Trailing 9-7 heading into the ninth, Dan Stefanilo (Sanford, ME) opened the inning with a single and Matt Judkins (Thomaston, ME) followed with a walk to bring the tying run to the plate.  A sacrifice moved both runners into scoring position for Provencher, who hammered a double to tie the game.  Following a walk to Pete MCLaughlin (Fairfield, ME), Hanson singled home Provencher to complete the comeback.

Greg Melanson (Littleton, NH) picked up the win in relief, working 1.1 scoreless innings with two strikeouts.  Provencher finished 4-for-5 with two runs scored and four RBI, and is now hitting a team-best .390 this season.

In the opener, Lyndon scored three times in the top of the first and held off Farmington down the stretch for the win.  Provencher drove in the first two runs with a second-inning double and Hanson added two hits.  Box 1    Box 2

With the game tied at 3-3 in game one, Farmington scored the decisive run in the top of the fourth, when Pat Howell (Bristol, ME) opened the inning with a double, moved to third on an infield error and scored on a sacrifice fly from Andrew Bellmore (Monmouth, ME).  Farmington had pushed across two the previous inning when Bellmore and Kyle Shea (Bar Harbor, ME) tripled and doubled to open the inning, the second run crossing on a single from Pete McLaughlin (Fairfield, ME).  Pendleton allowed just two hits and two walks, striking out two, over the final four innings to pick up the victory.  Box 1  Box 2

UMF Baseball Suffers a Pair of Setbacks at Castleton

The UMF baseball team traveled to Castleton, VT today for a NAC doubleheader and lost, 5-1 and 13-8.  The Beavers are now 2-11 overall and 0-6 in NAC play.

In the opener, the UMF offense was held to just four hits and one run, while UMF starter Pat Howell (Bristol, ME) kept the contest close into the middle innings.  After a pair of scoreless frames, he was nicked for single runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings, while Farmington scored its lone run in the top of the fifth, slicing the CSC lead to 2-1.  In that inning, Greg Melanson (Littleton, NH) opened with a single and, with one out, Kyle Shea (Bar Harbor, ME) doubled him home.  Howell (6IP, 9H, 5R, 3K) suffered the loss.

Farmington jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second game, scoring on singles from Pete McLaughlin (Fairfield, ME) and Howell in the first inning after singles from Aaron Wolfe (Wilton, ME) and Corey Provencher (Rumford, ME).  In the bottom half of the inning, Castleton scored 11 times against three UMF pitchers, collecting eight hits – including a home run, triple and two doubles.  Farmington’s third pitcher, Melanson, settled in nicely, working out of the first inning jam and allowing just two runs over the next six innings, but the Beaver bats came up short in their rally.  Farmington took advantage of two errors and a double from Dan Stefanilo (Sanford, ME) to score twice in the fourth and then added four more in the fifth, highlighted by a two-run single from Shea and RBI singles from Provencher and Andrew Bellmore (Monmouth, ME)

Shea finished the afternoon 4-for-6 with three RBI, while Provencher and Wolfe each collected three hits.  Box 1   Box 2

2007 SEASON PREVIEW

Beaver Nine Readies for 2007 Season

The UMF baseball team was back to work after the February vacation getting ready for the 2007 season on Monday, February 26. The Beavers return five position starters and three conference starting pitchers among 14 lettermen under head coach Dick Meader. Although Meader enters his 14th season at the helm of the UMF Baseball program, the beginning of each season is always an exciting time, and the 2007 campaign is shaping up to be no different.

“It’s good to get back out here after the break,” said Meader.  “We come into the spring pretty healthy so now its time for guys to raise their level of performance and build on last season.  They have worked very hard during the off-season which has allowed us to start off on a positive note.”

Meader and assistant coach Edwin Thompson have added eight recruits to the team this season – six high school players and two transfers. Overall, the Beaver coaching staff feels that it has assembled a group of recruits who will be valuable members of both the baseball team as well as the campus community.

“We have some quality kids, both athletically and academically,” Meader said. “We feel that all eight players are men of great character and address our two keys areas – pitching and defense - as we strive to get better in this league.

UMF opens the 2007 season on the road at Fisher College in Boston on March 25th a double header.

A look at the newcomers:

Brain Morrison 6’1-165 –RHP/IF-Saco, Me-Thornton Academy

Was selected to the SMAA all rookie team in 2003, was awarded coaches award his senior year, and was also the number one hitter in his conference in his senior year. Brain also a member of the football team and played in the 2006 Lobster Bowl.

Meader on Morrison-"Brain gives us pitching versatility where he can be used in many roles.  He has the capability to function in all roles from being a starter to closing a game.  Each time we saw Brain, hitters did not have much success off of him.  Brain will also give us depth in the infield, if needed.  He is capable of changing his arm slot for the infield and gives us options with him both as an infielder and hitter."

William Ridge 6-3, 210-RHP-South Portland, Me-Cheverus

Meader on Ridge- “Bill is a pitcher whose upside is on how hard he works.” He has excellent command with his pitches.  Bill has a fluid arm motion with minimal stress in his mechanics.  He possesses a very good curveball with consistent control.  Because of these qualities, he is sure to be one of the guys we rely on early in his career."

Phines Pheake -5’9, 170-OF- Penobscot, Me (George Stevens Academy)

Played for one of the top high school baseball programs in Maine.  He won 3 Eastern Maine Titles and two State titles during his four year career. He was a two time All Conference member, and was considered by many as the top defensive outfielder in the state last season. Played legion with fellow recruit Kyle Shea the past four summers.

Meader on Pheake- “Phines comes from a great high school program that had a lot of success during his four years at GSA. He is a true baseball player that cover a lot of ground in the outfield and can put pressure on the defense with his speed. He projects to hit some doubles for us with occasional power."  We expect him to have a great impact on our program this year and for the next four years.”

Michael Cummons-6’1-170 OF -Camden, Me-Camden Hills

Was a member of the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference

Meader on Cummons- "Michael is a student of the game.  His greatest assets are his speed and instinct on the bases.  Evaluating Michael as a hitter, he is a very tough out at the plate with a great knowledge of the strike zone.  As dangerous as he is to put a drag bunt down, he's equally as dangerous to drive the ball in the gaps for extra bases.  We like his competitive spirit on the field."

Matt Judkins 6’0-175-IF- Thomaston, Me- Georges Valley

Transferred from Flagler College in Florida (DII School) Was an All-Conference player from his senior year. He was the Student Athlete of the Year 04-05 and was also the team MVP 2005, as well as making the Mountain Valley Academic All-Star his senior year.

Meader On Judkins “Matt is a very good athlete he played three sports in high school and has really works very hard to become a very good defensive infielder. He will give us some energy after spending a year in Florida. We see Matt as one of the players that gets better every time he steps on the field.”

Kyle Shea-6’3- 185- 2B-Bar Harbor,Me-Mt. Desert Island

Transfer from St. Joe College after the first semester. Kyle was a four year starter at Mt. Desert Island, was considered as one of the best infielders in his conference. He was selected as team MVP his senior year and was also was a two year All-Conference selection. He also played legion together with fellow recruit Phines Pheake for the Trenton Acadians.

Meader on Shea- “Kyle will bring some athleticism in our infield, he has a strong arm  and great hands and once he gets stronger it will only help his already offensive potential.” We are very excited about this young man to be apart of our program for the next four years.” He possesses fluid actions as an infielder and has proven himself offensively facing top-notch pitching all summer with great success. When we watch him on the field you can see a great passion in the way he plays the game, and we are excited to have a player like that.

Steve Hutchinson-5’9-155-Untilty-Beverley, Ma (Beverley High School)

Was a two year letter winner for Beverley High School and is a very good athlete also playing football at Beverley.

Meader on Hutchinson- “Steve is a walk-on that has shown that he will work very hard everyday in practice. He can play every position on the field so that versatility will help our team out this season.”

Josh Greenlaw-5’10-175-RHP-N.Berwick ,Me- Noble

Meader on Greenlaw- “Josh is another walk-on who is going to look to improve his skills this season and will add depth in the bullpen for us.
