After back-to-back hits allowed Bates to score in the first inning,
Pendleton shut down the Bobcats the rest of the way, retiring 15 of 16
batters he faced from the end of the first through the sixth inning.
UMF meanwhile, did all of its scoring in the bottom of the fifth, when

Wolfe (Wilton, ME) added a single and double to UMF’s five-hit
effort in support of Pendleton, who improved to 3-2 with the win.
In
the second game, Bates scored two in the first and sealed the game with

Colby Outlasts UMF, 6-4, in Non-League
Baseball Action
Colby College used a four-run sixth inning to overcome a 2-1
deficit on its way to a 6-4 victory over UMaine-Farmington in non-league
baseball action this afternoon in Waterville.
A
nifty pitchers duel between Colby’s Sam Kennedy-Smith and UMF’s Dan
Hemdal (Nashua, NH) remained scoreless into the bottom of the fourth
when the Mules broke through for a run on an RBI single by Roddy Ames
but the Beavers tied the game in the top half of the fifth, when
Corey Provencher (Rumford, ME) laced a stand-up triple to the fence
in right-center, plating Brody Artes (Howell, ME), who walked to
open the inning. UMF took a 2-1 lead an inning later when Pete
McLaughlin (Benton, ME) doubled and raced home on Tyler Hanson’s
(Sanford, ME) single to right.
The
lead was short-lived, however, as Colby struck for four in the sixth
against a tiring Hemdal, who walked three and allowed a single before
turning the ball over to Kyle Feltis (Bristol, ME), who allowed
both inherited runners to score. Feltis pitched the final 2.1 innings,
allowing one unearned run.
The
top three hitters in the UMF lineup – Provencher, Aaron Wolfe
(Wilton, ME) and Chip Burnham (Winthrop, ME) – collected two
hits apiece to lead a nine-hit attack. Hemdal (5.2 IP, 5 H, 5 R)
suffered the loss.

UMF Baseball Sweeps Lyndon State in
Dramatic Fashion
Aaron
Wolfe (Wilton, ME) banged out four hits and drove in a pair of runs, while
freshman hurlers Pat Howell (Bristol, ME) and Craig Pendleton
(Arundel, ME) turned in strong starting efforts, to lead the UMF
baseball team to a doubleheader sweep of Lyndon State today in
Farmington, 3-2 and 8-6. A pair of late-game, clutch hits provided the
difference for the Beavers, who improve to 8-16.
In
the opener, Howell worked 5.0 innings, allowing just four hits and two
runs, while Pete McLaughlin (Benton, ME) snapped a 2-2 tie with a
walk-off, RBI single in the bottom of the seventh to seal the 3-2 win.
A Chip Burnham (Winthrop, ME) fielder’s choice and a Brody
Artes (Howell, ME) sacrifice fly produced the first two runs, as UMF
took a 2-0 lead after two, but Lyndon State scored single runs in the
third and fifth to tie the game. Greg Melanson (Littleton, NH),
who scored the decisive run, reached on an error to open the seventh and
moved over to third on single by Wolfe and walk to Burnham, which loaded
the bases for McLaughlin’s heroics.
In
the second game, Pendleton allowed just one earned run over 5.0 innings
of work and the Beavers used a 12-hit attack to complete the sweep with
an 8-6 win. Corey Provencher (Rumford, ME) was 3-for-4 with a
double and two runs scored from the leadoff spot, as eight of nine
starters collected at least one hit.
After Lyndon State scored four runs in the top of the fifth to take a
4-3 lead, UMF responded with four of its own in the bottom of the inning
on its way to victory. Melanson opened the inning with a double and,
with one out, Wolfe drove him home with a single to tie the game.
Burnham then singled to put runners at the corners and, with two away,
Ryan DiPompo (Jay, ME) delivered the biggest hit of the game, a
two-run triple that extended UMF’s lead to 6-4. Jake Turner (Jay,
ME) promptly delivered DiPompo with a crisp single to finish off the
scoring and push the lead to 7-4. UMF’s final run crossed in the sixth,
when Provencher singled, stole second and third, and scored on a Wolfe

Pendleton Pitches UMF Baseball to Split
with Castleton St.
Freshman
Craig Pendleton (Arundel, ME) allowed just five hits and one run
in a complete-game effort to lead the UMF baseball team (6-16, 2-8 NAC)
to a split with Castleton State this afternoon at Hippach Field. The
Beavers posted a furious rally in the opener but came up short, 11-10,
after trailing 6-0 in the first inning and 10-3 after two.
Pendleton allowed a walk and two-out single in the first as Castleton
jumped out to a 1-0 lead, but he was dazzling the rest of the way,
allowing just four hits over the final six innings. The score remained
at 1-0 until the bottom of the sixth, when Greg Melanson (Littleton,
NH) reached on a one-out single to start the rally. After a
Corey Provencher (Rumford, ME) flyout, Aaron Wolfe (Wilton, ME)
drove in Melanson with a two-out single and moved to third on an
outfield error. He then scored on a double from Chip Burnham
(Winthrop, ME) which provided Pendleton with enough of a cushion to
finish off the win.
Castleton
scored six runs in the first inning of game one, although UMF fought
back for three of its own to cut the lead to 6-3. CSC put up four more
in the second to take a 10-3 lead, but the Beavers chipped away with
seven over the next three innings – although unable to tie the game.
Pete McLaughlin (Benton, ME) delivered a two-run single to highlight
a four-run fourth inning for Farmington, which scored Wolfe (4-for-4)
and Burnham (2-for-5). Jacob Turner (Jay, ME), who was 2-for-4,
was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the fifth to finish off the
scoring.
UMF
was able to claw back into the game thanks to the outstanding relief
effort of Kyle Feltis (Bristol, ME), who allowed just one run in
4.0 innings, while Ryan DiPompo (Jay, ME) pitched a scoreless
seventh.

The
Terriers opened up a 5-0, fourth inning lead on UMF in the opener, but
the Beavers rallied to tie the game with a five-run fifth. A pair of
costly infield errors led to the runs, all of which were unearned, but
three-straight run-producing singles from Devin Gill (Gray, ME),
Corey Provencher (Rumford, ME) and Aaron Wolfe (Wilton, ME)
knotted the game. In the top of the sixth, however, Thomas pushed
across the decisive run and held on for the victory. Gill led UMF with

towards second and was hung up in a run-down, at which point Gill broke
for the plate and jarred the ball loose to score the go-ahead run.
Hemdal put the tying run on base in the top of the seventh, but used a
pair of strikeouts to pick up the win.
The
Beavers had taken a 2-0 lead on an RBI single from Cody Stackpole
