Baseball Goes 1-2 in Conference Tournament

The UMF baseball team blasted into the NAC tournament on Friday when they exploded for 20 runs versus #1 seed Becker College eventually downing the Hawks 20-7.  The Beaver offense stayed in high gear throughout the tournament, but came up one run short in the next two games versus Thomas and Castleton State (8-9, 4-5) as UMF's season came to a close on Saturday.  John Rutkiewicz and Zach Reed were selected to the NAC all tournament team.  In the Becker game, Eric Cummings hit his second grand slam homerun of the week to give UMF a 9-2 edge.  The Beavers added seven more runs in the third inning, another in the fourth and three in the sixth to close the game at 20-7.  Along with Cummings' impressive outing, John Rutkiewicz chipped in going 4 for 5 with 3 RBI's and Zach Reed went 3 for 4 with 3 RBI's.  Reed earned his third win of the season on the mound for the Beavers giving up four earned runs on eight hits and five strikeouts.  With the win UMF advanced to Saturday's second round game versus Thomas College who defeated Castleton State on Friday.  The Terriers jumped out to a 6-0 lead by the end of the second inning, but the Beavers battled back in the third inning when Zach Reed doubled in two runs and Justin Quimby hit in another to close the gap to 3-6.  Both teams scored a run in the fourth and Thomas added two more in the sixth to extend the lead to 9-4.  In the seventh inning UMF put together two singles (Reed, Kris Garrow) and a pinch hit homerun by Peter McLaughlin to close to within one run.  But that was as close as UMF would get after leaving two runners on base in the top of the ninth inning.  In the double elimination tournament, UMF advanced to face Castleton State at 3:30pm who defeated Becker College early Saturday morning.  Once again UMF found themselves down early 2-1 at the end of five innings.  The Beavers captured the lead in the sixth on three hits (Garrow, Quimby, Keith LeBlanc) for two runs.  However, Castleton answered immediately scoring two in the bottom of the stanza to recapture the lead.  The score stood at 5-3, Castleton, as the Beavers entered the top of the ninth inning.  Rutkiewicz scored after reaching on an error, but UMF left two on base for a final score of 4-5.  UMF's Ray Doubleday gave up five earned runs on nine hits on the mound.  UMF closes the season at 8-21.
