Baseball All Conference Selections Announced

UMF baseball players James Writer and John Rutkiewicz have been selected to the All Conference team for the Sunrise Conference.  Writer, an outfielder from Fletcher, VT, leads the team offensively with a .407 batting average and 37 total hits and 47 total bases.  Rutkiewicz, a pitcher from Cranston, RI, holds a 3-1 record and a team best 2.10 ERA to go along with a .258 batting average. 

Baseball Tournament Results

The UMF baseball team defeated Lyndon State College in the second round of the Sunrise Conference Tournament to finish in 3rd place overall.  In their first game UMF suffered a 5-8 loss to #2 seed Thomas College.  Leading the offense was catcher Tom Ventura when he hit a 2 run homer in the 8th.  Zach Reed was credited with the loss.  In game two on Sunday UMF defeated Lyndon State College 8-6.  Jeff Casavant had 7 strike outs on the mound for the win.  Tom Ventura went 2 for 4 including a 2 RBI single in a 6 run third inning.  Later on Sunday UMF faced #1 seed Husson College in the elimination game.  The Beavers held a 2-1 advantage until Husson evened the score in the bottom of the 7th inning.  The score would remain tied until the bottom of the 12th inning when Husson pushed two runs across on 3 hits.  Ray Doubleday was credited with the loss.  UMF completes the season with a 11-16 overall record.

Today's Baseball Game Change

The UMF baseball game versus Bates will be played at Bates at 2:30pm.  The weather will determine whether it will be a doubleheader or not. 

Baseball Tournament Date Change

Due to the prediction of inclement weather the Sunrise Conference Baseball Tournament has been moved to Saturday, Sunday and Monday - May 3, 4, & 5.  All game times will remain the same.

Baseball Clinches Playoff Slot With Wins Over UMPI

The UMF baseball team secured third place in the conference today when they defeated UMaine Presque Isle 18-10 and 14-5.  UMF's Tom Ventura led the Beaver offense with a home run in each game.  Key defensive plays by James Writer in the outfield provided support to UMF pitchers Dan Fay and Ray Doubleday who each earned wins.  UMF looks forward to the Sunrise Conference playoffs which begin Friday at Husson College.

Baseball Improves Chances For Playoffs With Wins

The UMF baseball team improved its chances of securing the fourth and final playoff slot in the Sunrise Conference today when they defeated visiting Lyndon State College 17-7 and 11-1.  UMF will take on UMaine Presque tomorrow at 12pm for a doubleheader in the final conference games of the season.

Baseball Drops Two to Thomas College

The UMF baseball suffered two close one point losses to Thomas College on Wednesday, 1-2 and 4-5.  In the first game UMF got on the scoreboard first in the third, but game up a run in the 4th and 5th innings to fall behind for good.  James Writer and Keith LeBlanc had two hits each.  Jeff Casavant was credited with the loss.  In the second game junior John Rutkiewicz gave up only 3 earned runs with no walks in the 4-5 loss.  Offensively, Tyler Jellison came off of the bench to get lead the Beavers with 2 hits and an RBI.  Tom Ventura also have 2 RBI's.  UMF drops to 6-13 overall and 5-9 in the conference.  Next up will be Lyndon State in Farmington on Saturday weather permitting.

Baseball Splits Series with Fisher

In a four game series over the holiday weekend, the UMF baseball team managed 2 wins over conference opponent Fisher College.  In Saturday's first game UMF came up just short losing 7-9.  Dustin Armitage led the offense going 3 for 5 scoring 3 runs.  Other repeat hitters were James Writer (3 RBI's) and Jeff Casavant.  Casavant was credited with the loss and drops to 1-3 on the season.  In the second game on Saturday, the Beavers blanked Fisher winning 6-0.  Freshman Ben Smith was UMF's only repeat hitter with 2 hits and 2 RBI's.  John Rutkiewicz earned his second win of the season improving to 2-0.  On Monday the two teams met for a doubleheader in Farmington.  The first game went to Fisher 3-1.  James Writer led UMF with 3 hits in 5 at bats.  Dave Sharland also chipped in 2 hits.  Zach Reed was credited with the loss.  In the second game of the day, the Beavers came away with a 3-2 win improving to 4-9 overall and 3-5 in the conference.  Getting hits for UMF were James Writer, Zach Reed, Tom Ventura and Dave Sharland.  Ray Doubleday earned his first win  of the season pitching a complete game.  UMF will return to action tomorrow when the travel to Thomas College for a doubleheader to begin at 1pm.

Baseball Loses Two to Thomas 

In the first game of the doubleheader, the UMF baseball team was unable to generate any runs off of their 5 hits.  Jeff Casavant and James Writer led the Beavers at the plate going 2 for 3 and 2 for 4 respectively.  UMF's Zach Reed was credited with the 0-10 loss.  In the second game UMF doubled its number is hits with 10, but again was not able to hold off a strong Thomas team losing 5-11.  John Rutkiewicz led the Beavers going 3 for 3 with one RBI.  Ben Smith went 2 for 3.  Tom Ventura, Justin Quimby and Keith LeBlanc each had RBI's in the effort.  Ray Doubleday was credited with the loss.  UMF returns to action on Saturday when they travel to Boston to play Fisher College.

Baseball Splits With Husson 

The UMF baseball team split the first of two doubleheaders with Husson this weekend.  Playing very solid both offensively and defensively, the Beavers managed a 13-12 win in the second game yesterday after suffering a 3-4 loss in the first game.  In game 1 Zach Reed led the way on the mound and at the plate.  He pitched a complete 9 inning game striking out 5 and was UMF only repeat hitter with two hits and two RBI's.  In the second game the Beavers rallied in the sixth to score 4 runs and held Husson in the top of the 7th to secure the win.  Ray Doubleday pitched 5 innings and was relieved by Al Glossian and John Rutkiewicz.  UMF improves to 4-5 overall and 3-1 in the Sunrise.  The Beavers will travel to Husson again today for another doubleheader at 12pm.  

Baseball Sweeps UMPI

The UMF baseball team opened conference play Friday with a two game sweep of UMaine Presque Isle, 11-1 and 10-7.  In the first game the Beavers sprayed 11 hits, with Dave Sharland and James Writer getting two hits each.  Dan Cummings hit a three run homer in his first collegiate at bat to give UMF a comfortable lead in the 5th inning.  Dan Fay pitched a complete game, striking out 6 to get his first win of the season.  In the second game UMF continued with more offense and solid defense notching 10 hits and only 3 errors.  Repeat hitters for the Beavers were Zach Reed and Tom Ventura.  Cooper Willard pitched 5 innings to earn the win.  UMF improves to 2-4 on the season and 2-0 in the Sunrise Conference.

Changes to this Weekend's Baseball and Softball Games

The UMF home baseball game versus Husson College on Saturday will be played at Husson at the normally scheduled time, as will the games on Sunday.

The UMF softball games versus Husson scheduled for Saturday have been rescheduled for April 24th.  This Sunday's games will be played at Maine Maritime Academy noon.

Baseball Drops Doubleheader to St. Joe's

The UMF baseball lost both games of a doubleheader with St. Joseph's College yesterday, 0-10 and 2-6.  In the first game Dustin Armitage and Justin Quimby each had hits.  While in the second game Zach Reed and Cooper Willard had two hits each followed by Dan Fay, Keith LeBlanc and Dave Sharland with one hit each.  Sharland recorded UMF's lone RBI.  Pitching in the first game was Dan Fay and Ray Doubleday.  Zach Reed pitched a complete second game.  UMF returns to the diamond today when they travel to Colby College a single game starting at 3:30pm.

Weekend Games Postponed

The UMF baseball and softball games scheduled for this weekend have been postponed.  A reschedule date has not yet been set.  

Baseball Suffers Loss to Bates

The UMF baseball team was defeated by Bates College yesterday 5-9.  In spite of blinding snow, the Beavers managed 7 hits, but left 10 runners on base in the loss.  Offensively UMF was led by freshman Ben Smith who slapped 3 hits in 4 at bats.  Junior Sach Reed also contributed 2 hits, including a triple, and 2 RBI's.  The Beavers hope to begin conference play next week.

Today's UMF baseball game at Bates College has been rescheduled for Thursday the 3rd at 3pm.

Baseball Opens Season Against Bowdoin

The UMF baseball team opened the season yesterday taking on Bowdoin College at Southern Maine Technical College in South Portland.  UMF received hits from freshman Ben Smith and senior Dave Sharland in the 0-13 loss.  Reed was credited with the loss.  The beavers return to the diamond on Saturday April 5th when they host UMaine Presque Isle in the conference opener at Hippach Field at 1pm.
